With this setup, it is possible to combine the analytical techniques TGA, FT-IR and GC-MS via coupling of the devices with a transfer line. The TGA–IR–GS-MS ‘Hyphenation setup’ is a powerful analysis technique to identify complex and unknown materials. Gasses evolved from the TGA are transported via the transfer line through an IR gas cell to continuously measure the IR absorbance. The gasses can be collected at any given moment during the measurement to be injected into the GC-MS. Different configurations of the setup (TGA-IR, TGA-MS, TGA-CG-MS, TGA-IR-GC-MS) can be made, to enable applications like the determination of the primary building blocks of a material or the identification of certain additives therein.
